Economic Development Update

August 22 marked the start of the Fall 2022 semester, which is poised to be the largest yet. UT Dallas could see our total student enrollment potentially surpassing 31,000 for the first time, marking a large milestone for the University. The Office of Facilities & Economic Development hosted our annual Weeks of Welcome event across campus to celebrate our new and returning students.

Doug McDonald has been named as the City of Plano’s new director of economic development this month. McDonald is recently coming from the City of Richardson, where he has played a pivotal role in creating the Richardson Innovation Quarter and has worked with UT Dallas to support the local startup and small business ecosystem.

Tiancheng Hu

For the second time, a UT Dallas alumnus has been selected to be a Gates Cambridge Scholar at the University of Cambridge this Fall. Tiancheng Hu, who graduated from UTD with a degree in electrical engineering in 2020, was one of the 79 recipients this year from a pool of over 5,000 applicants to win this prestigious award as he pursues his PhD in computation, cognition, and language.
