DFW recorded a net gain of 22,700 jobs in May, bringing the region 79,500 jobs short of February 2020 pre-pandemic employment. Unemployment rates improved in DFW and Texas, at 5.3% and 5.9%, respectively, and remained unchanged in the U.S. at 5.7%. Job postings in DFW rose 3% between April and May 2021, exceeding May 2020 job postings by 37 percent. The top three positions posted were software developers, registered nurses, and heavy truck drivers, though heavy truck drivers were 8% lower than April 2021. The Dallas-Fort Worth region was ranked #6 in the world for innovation in a recent list by 2thinknow, a firm that does research and analysis globally. The only U.S. cities that were ahead of North Texas were Boston and New York City. DFW climbed six spots since 2019, and a director at the firm credits the region’s economic policy, net migration, growth, input costs, trade and “remaining open” as factors behind its rise this year.
