UT Dallas Wins UEDA Award for Excellence in Place & Innovation

Dr. Calvin D. Jamison, vice president for facilities and economic development, and Jenny Mizutowicz, manager of economic development initiatives, accepted an Award for Excellence in the Place & Innovation category at the University Economic Development Association (UEDA [University Economic Development Association] ) Annual Summit in Reno, Nevada on October 1 for showing how UT Dallas generated economic development in the region through the creation of the UT Dallas Intellectual Transit-Oriented Transformational Incubator (DITTI [UT Dallas Intellectual Transit-Oriented Transformational Incubator] ).

The DITTI [UT Dallas Intellectual Transit-Oriented Transformational Incubator] project provided opportunities for UT Dallas students, faculty and staff to “Live, Learn & Connect” on campus through the closely-situated facilities for Northside (housing and retail opportunities developed through a Public-Private Partnership, or P3 [Public-Private Partnership] ), UTDesign (Jonsson School engineering and computer science senior capstone program which partners with and welcomes industry on campus), and the upcoming DART [Dallas Area Rapid Transit] Silver Line Station.

The project is unique in terms of economic development on a university campus in that it highlights the successful execution of a P3 [Public-Private Partnership] while also incorporating DART [Dallas Area Rapid Transit] , and creates an intellectual village connected to the world via DFW [Dallas - Fort Worth]  Airport. It demonstrates how UT Dallas is dedicated to reaching its strategic initiative of becoming an “economic engine” for the region. UT Dallas was selected as the winner by conference attendees among finalists in its category representing the University of Alaska Anchorage and the University of Nevada Reno.

Established in 1976, UEDA [University Economic Development Association] brings together higher education institutions, private sector businesses, non-profits, government organizations, and community economic development stakeholders to create local and regional economic opportunity. Its membership consists of 160 organizations, who represent those at the leading edge of modern economic development thinking and practice.
